YouTube CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before revenue share. It is not creator revenue per 1,000 video views. Playback-based CPM uses monetized playbacks instead of individual ad impressions; RPM uses creator revenue and a different view denominator.
CPM measures advertiser spending for every 1,000 ad impressions. Playback-based CPM instead measures spending for every 1,000 video playbacks with one or more ads. One playback can contain several ad impressions, so the two rates need not match. These definitions follow YouTube Help's Understand ad revenue analytics documentation, reviewed September 9, 2026.
Do not multiply CPM by all video views and call the result earnings. Some views have no ads, some have multiple ads, and revenue-sharing arrangements depend on the monetization product. Creator RPM is measured after revenue share and may include eligible revenue beyond ads. There is no fixed conversion from CPM to RPM.
Compare CPM over equal periods with the same currency and similar geography, format, and ad mix. Changes can reflect advertiser demand or audience composition. A higher CPM alone does not prove that a video earned more total revenue. Use your own authorized Revenue report and record what changed before choosing an action.

Advertiser cost divided by ad impressions, multiplied by 1,000
Benchmark: Compare your own matched periods; no universal target
Advertiser cost divided by monetized playbacks, multiplied by 1,000
Benchmark: A playback can include more than one ad
Reported creator revenue per 1,000 views; Shorts use engaged views
Benchmark: Cannot be inferred from CPM alone
If advertisers spend $20 for 4,000 ad impressions, CPM is $20 / 4,000 × 1,000 = $5. These fictional inputs illustrate the formula; they are not a niche benchmark or creator payout.
If the same $20 of spend covers 2,500 monetized playbacks, playback-based CPM is $8. It differs from the $5 impression CPM because some playbacks contain multiple ads. Neither value reveals total creator revenue.
